The Power of Saintly Intercession

Asking for the intercession of the saints is a great way to receive strength and accompaniment on the journey towards Heaven. The great St. John Vianney knew this well, yet became a great proponent of asking the saints to intercede for the faithful after he experienced saintly intercession in a powerful way.

St. John Vianney, born in 1786, is renowned for his holiness, pastoral care, and dedication to the sacrament of confession. He served as the parish priest in Ars, France, where his humility and dedication drew thousands of souls seeking care and guidance.

But did you know that St. John Vianney had a strong devotion to St. Philomena? His veneration for her played a significant role in his ministry and the miracles attributed to him.

St. Philomena, whose relics were discovered in the early 19th century, quickly became known for her miraculous intercessions. When her relics were brought to Ars, St. John Vianney felt an immediate connection to her. He dedicated his ministry and many of his prayers to her, believing strongly in her powerful intercession.

Vianney dedicated himself to St. Philomena by special vow, referring to her as his 'dear little saint.' He would often say, "I have never asked for anything through the intercession of my little saint without having been answered." He attributed numerous miracles in his parish to St. Philomena’s intercession, including healings and conversions.

One notable miracle involved a young girl who was gravely ill. Vianney prayed fervently to St. Philomena for her help, and miraculously she was healed. Vianney believed that it was not he who performed the miracle but that his “little saint”  St. Philomena interceded miraculously upon his request.

In honor of St. Philomena, St. John Vianney built a shrine in the Church of Ars, where he encouraged the faithful to seek her intercession. He also dedicated one of the altars to her and frequently distributed medals of St. Philomena to pilgrims, urging them to pray to her with confidence.

Vianney’s devotion to St. Philomena was not just about seeking miracles; rather the miracles were the fruit of a beautiful friendship which the two believers in Christ maintained and their common love for Jesus Christ. St. John Vianney’s love for St. Philomena was rooted in his recognition of her purity, courage, and steadfast faith, virtues he sought to emulate in his own life.

St. John Vianney’s life teaches us the power of intercessory prayer and the profound impact that devotion to the saints can have on our spiritual journey. Through his example, we are reminded to turn to the saints, like St. Philomena, for guidance, support, and miraculous help in times of need.
